About single-tooth implants

Single-Tooth Implants at Our Clinic

Replace one missing tooth with a stand-alone implant and crown.

What is a single-tooth implant?

A single-tooth implant replaces one missing tooth from the root up, so the new tooth looks and works much like a natural one. It has three parts. A small titanium post sits in the jawbone and acts as an artificial root. An abutment connects to that post. A custom crown goes on top, shaped and shaded to blend in with the teeth around it.

Because the post fuses with the bone, the implant stands on its own and does not lean on the teeth on either side for support. It is one of a few tooth-replacement options we talk through as part of our dental implants care across Scarborough.

Single-tooth implants are available at all five of our neighbourhood clinics across Scarborough and East York: EK Dental in Ionview, Mantra Dental at Markham and Sheppard, PL Dental in Wexford, and VS Dental in Parkview Hills.

Who is a single-tooth implant for?

A single-tooth implant is usually worth considering when you are missing one tooth, whether you lost it to injury, decay, or an extraction. It can suit people who want to fill that gap without touching the healthy teeth beside it.

Implant treatment depends on having enough healthy jawbone to hold the post, and on your overall oral and general health. If you are missing several teeth in a row, your dentist may talk through an implant-supported option such as implant-supported dentures instead.

Whether a single-tooth implant is right for you comes down to a consultation. Your dentist will examine the area, review your health history, and take any imaging needed to check the bone and the tissue around it.

The single-tooth implant process, step by step

Treatment usually happens over several visits, with healing time built in between the main stages. Your dentist will walk you through the timeline that fits your situation.

  1. Consultation and assessment: your dentist examines the area, reviews your medical and dental history, and uses imaging to check the jawbone and plan where the implant will sit.
  2. Implant placement: the titanium post goes into the jawbone during a focused procedure done with local anaesthetic.
  3. Healing and osseointegration: over the next few weeks to a few months, the bone gradually bonds with the post, a process called osseointegration, which gives the tooth a stable base.
  4. Abutment and crown: once your dentist confirms healing, the abutment is fitted and a custom crown is attached to finish the new tooth.

Some patients need a preliminary step first, such as a bone graft, before placement. If that applies to you, your dentist will raise it during the planning stage.

Single-tooth implant vs a dental bridge

A traditional bridge replaces a missing tooth by anchoring to the teeth on either side, which usually means filing down those healthy teeth so they can hold it. A single-tooth implant takes a different route, and it comes with a few advantages worth weighing up with your dentist.

  • Leaves the neighbouring teeth alone, since the implant stands on its own and does not need them filed down
  • Will not develop decay in the replacement tooth itself, though the gums and bone around it still need care
  • Helps support the jawbone, because the post stimulates the bone the way a natural root does and can reduce the bone loss that often follows a missing tooth
  • Cleans up much like a natural tooth, so you brush and floss it as part of your normal routine

A bridge can still be the better fit in some cases. Your dentist will help you compare the options against your bone, your budget, and what you want from the result.

Comfort, recovery, and aftercare

The placement procedure is done with local anaesthetic, and many people find the recovery easier than they expected. A bit of swelling or tenderness in the days afterward is common, and you can usually manage it with the guidance your dentist gives you.

Looking after your implant

Once your implant is finished, the day-to-day care is straightforward and much like looking after your natural teeth.

  • Brush twice a day and floss around the implant and crown
  • Keep up with regular checkups and cleanings so your dentist can monitor the implant and the gums around it
  • Avoid using your teeth to open packaging or bite very hard objects
  • Tell your dentist promptly if you notice looseness, discomfort, or changes in the gums

With steady home care and regular visits, a single-tooth implant is designed to last a long time. Cost and coverage are part of the conversation too. We accept all dental insurance including the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), ODSP, and Healthy Smiles, and you can ask about coverage when you book a dental implants consultation.

Frequently asked questions

FAQs About Single-Tooth Implants

How long does a single-tooth implant take from start to finish?

It usually runs over several months, because the bone needs time to bond with the titanium post before the crown goes on. Your dentist will give you a timeline based on how you heal and your specific situation.

Is a single-tooth implant better than a bridge?

Each option has trade-offs. An implant leaves the neighbouring teeth alone and helps support the jawbone, while a bridge can suit other situations. Your dentist will help you compare them at a consultation.

Does getting a single-tooth implant hurt?

The procedure is done with local anaesthetic, and some tenderness or swelling afterward is common and usually manageable with your dentist's guidance. Your dentist will explain what to expect during recovery.

Is the Canadian Dental Care Plan accepted for implant treatment?

Our clinics across Scarborough and East York accept all dental insurance, including the CDCP, ODSP, and Healthy Smiles. Coverage varies by plan, so ask our team to review what applies to your treatment.
